Steamboat boys basketball tops Star Valley

— It took all of 14 hours for the Steamboat Springs boys basketball team to bounce back from its worst lost of the season.

Just a day after getting shellacked by No. 2 Rock Springs, Wyo., on Thursday, Steamboat came back on the second day of the Flaming Gorge Classic 2010 invitational basketball tournament to beat No. 6 Star Valley, 47-45.

"We didn't start flat at all," Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said. "We played well for the entire game"

Steamboat (5-3) led for much of the first half Friday in Green River, Wyo., taking a 26-15 lead into halftime. But Star Valley hit five 3-pointers in the third quarter to tie the game at 34 heading into the final frame.

The fourth was back-and-forth the entire way, until Charles Wood got fouled with 10 seconds left with the score at 45-all.

Wood hit two free throws to take a 47-45 lead, and Star Valley couldn't answer on the other end.

Steamboat's defense led the way, limiting a 6-foot-8-inch player from Star Valley the entire game. Offensively, Steamboat guard Isiah Mendoza-Forsyth had a breakout game. The senior led the Sailors with 22 points, including 12 in the first quarter.

"Getting Isiah to step up was huge for us," DeWolfe said.

Steamboat also got 16 points from Randall Nelson.

Steamboat wraps up the tournament at 11:45 a.m. today against Evanston, Wyo.
