Steamboat boys basketball team ready for must-win games
January 14, 2011
Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs boys basketball coach Luke DeWolfe calls today and Saturday's games must-wins. He's got several years of data to support his reasoning.
After an opening Western Slope League loss to Glenwood Springs last week, DeWolfe knows that to win a league title, the Sailors need to be able to defeat Battle Mountain today and Eagle Valley on Saturday.
Today's game is on the road at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's game is at home at 3:30 p.m.
"The league hasn't allowed you to lose more than one game and still win a league title," DeWolfe said.
The coach said Glenwood didn't beat Steamboat (5-6, 0-1) as much as Steamboat beat itself. The Sailors missed 16 shots inside the paint against Glenwood and let a big early lead slip away.
To get two wins this weekend, DeWolfe said his team must finish shots around the basket to prevent prolonged scoring droughts.
"It creates frustration, but it also creates motivation and understanding you're a good team, you just have to make shots," he said. "As much as anything, it's attacking the basket and making sure you end up finishing."
