Steamboat Springs — On the first day the Colorado High School Activities Association allows games, Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball coach Luke DeWolfe will get an early look at a team many think will contend for a Western Slope League title.
And what a look it will be.
Steamboat welcomes Niwot for a 6 p.m. game today at Steamboat Springs High School.
The Cougars play in the Class 4A Northern League, usually one of the top leagues in the state. Niwot is coming off a down year where the team finished 10-14 overall.
Steamboat, who returns all five starters from last year's 15-9 team, should get an early challenge before playing three preseason tournaments.
DeWolfe previously has said he is not worried about the offense — the team returns the bulk of its scorers, including All-League guards Charles Wood and Isiah Forsyth — but is more concerned with the Sailors' effort on the defensive end.
"I think we're definitely further along than we've been," DeWolfe said Tuesday. "We're the furthest along we've been since I've been coach. This group of seniors, they have a pretty good understanding of my expectations, and I have a pretty good idea of what they can do. That being said, we still have a long ways to go. We'll see good indication what we can do" today.
