Steamboat baseball team pulls off huge comeback
March 16, 2014
Steamboat Springs — A late-inning rally lifted the Steamboat Springs High School baseball team from sure defeat to victory Saturday
The Sailors scored nine times in the sixth inning to stun Hotchkiss, 10-9.
The win bumped Steamboat to 3-0 on the season, and it pumped up an enthusiastic group of players.
"They're just really producing and doing a great job," Steamboat coach Rusty McRight said. "This is pretty big and the kids are excited."
Steamboat scored first but quickly gave up eight runs and seemed hopelessly behind. A bottom-of-the-lineup spark caught fire, however, and soon the team was within one run, 8-7, with two outs in the sixth and second-to-last inning.
Billy Clark was at the plate with the squeeze play on but bunted foul. Swinging away on his next pitch, he drove a double into the outfield, scoring the tying run. Ryan Jeep and Charlie Fitzhugh each added hits of their own to tally two more runs.
Hotchkiss scored one more time, but Steamboat held on to keep its record perfect.
"It was good for them to know they could come back from that large of a deficit and still pull off a win," McRight said. "The sticks came around, and we started hitting the ball and producing on the base paths. We're becoming more disciplined."
The Sailors will look to carry their momentum into an 11 a.m. game Saturday at Eagle Valley.
