Steamboat baseball falls to Delta in doubleheader

— The Steamboat Springs High School baseball team dropped two games Saturday in Delta, falling 5-1 and 11-6.

The Sailors (5-4 overall, 2-2 in the Western Slope League) struggled to play defense all day, despite getting a pair of solid efforts on the mound.

Tyler Brown started the first game and went the distance while striking out four and not walking a batter. Of the five runs Brown gave up, only three were earned.

"The errors were what killed us," Steamboat manager Kellen Baker said. "Defensively, we need to take care of the ball better."

Steamboat managed only a pair of hits in the first game, one each from Cutter Pasternak and Carson Becker.

Brandon Clark scored the lone Steamboat run after reaching on an error.

In the second game, Tommy Lyon pitched, giving up nine hits and walking just one.

"The pitchers did a really good job of locating," Baker said. "But they hit us around."

Steamboat out-hit Delta in the second game, 15-9, but of Delta's 11 runs, only five were earned.

Clark led the Sailors, going 4 for 4 with a double and a home run. Lyon was 3 for 5, and Justin Ditter had a pair of hits.

"I told the guys even though we're coming out with a couple losses, it's the way we battled," Baker said. "We played seven innings hard each game. Although we didn't send a message we wanted to send, everyone knows we're here to play. We can battle with anyone in the league. Put aside the unearned runs, we could have come away with a win or two."

Steamboat had opened some eyes recently with a sweep of Glenwood Springs last weekend. In both games, Steamboat came from behind to surprise Glenwood. But on Saturday that wasn't the case. Delta, who most consider a favorite and the best hitting team in the league, proved there is still a gap between Steamboat and the elite.

Baker, however, said he thinks the team's early success still has the rest of the league aware of the Sailors.

Steamboat has a doubleheader against Battle Mountain on Saturday in Craig. The first game is scheduled for 11 a.m.
