Steamboat athletes place high in Saturday skate race
Event is last qualifier before Junior Olympics in Maine
February 28, 2010
Steamboat Springs — Sunny weather greeted the second day of the Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships and Junior Olympic qualifying racing Saturday in Steamboat Springs.
The day was a success for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's Nordic racers, who competed in a 5-kilometer mass start skate race at Howelsen Hill. Nearly 100 of the club's skiers participated, cross-country coach Brian Tate said.
The club's first-place finishers were Michaela Frias, Mary O'Connell, Max Scrimgeour, Nikki Katthain, Katy Floyd, Bode Flannigan and Avery Harrington. The day also included 20-, 15- and 10-kilometer races for older skiers.
Tate said he was pleased with the club's performance and the overall event.
"As an organization, this went very, very well," he said. "Our volunteer group here is really supportive, and we thank the city for the use of Howelsen facilities because they're just a really, really great place to hold a ski race, a Nordic ski race."
Those who qualify will compete in the Junior Olympics, scheduled for March 8 to 14 in Presque Isle, Maine.
The Winter Sports Club's Nordic team also came out on top of the Rocky Mountain Division, Tate said. There are nine clubs in the division, and the club that earns the most points based on skier finishes wins a trophy.
"We will win it for the second year in a row, and it had been 12 years before we won it, and we won it last year, so we're pretty excited," Tate said.
They couldn't have asked for a better day to ski Saturday.
"I think everyone came away real happy," he said. "The sun was out, a little bit of blue sky, great snow conditions."
