Steamboat athletes garner medals at Special Olympics in Craig

— More than 20 Routt County residents competed May 21 at the 2011 Craig Special Olympics swim and track and field competitions.

The Special Olympics Colorado Western Area Summer Games took place at Moffat County High School, with nearly 100 athletes from the Western Slope competing in track and field, weightlifting and swimming.

Picking up wins for the Steamboat team in track events were Krysdal Weiland, Jaimee Sexton, Sue White, Bev Charlesworth, Marcella Chavez, Misty Garcia, Wendy Maldonado, Alyessa Yeagher, Mark Sauthoff, Jeff Dockstader, Jeff Turner, Jon Allee, Mark Leftwich and Keith Fortune.

Also medaling in track events were Debbie Linthicum, Aimee Edgerley, Lizzy Gibbs, Rick Rapalee and Richard Yowell.

In the swimming events, Sexton picked up a win and Jamie Kaminski brought home three gold medals. Rhianna Gifford also won an individual medal, while Seth Sobeski earned a pair of medals. The team of Sexton, Kaminski, Gifford and Sobeski also won the 100 relay.
