Steamboat Springs — Cycling fans, it's time to dust off those cowbells. On Aug. 21 and 22, Steamboat Springs will host the USA Pro Challenge. Dubbed the "World's Best Stage Race" by Cycling News, the USA Pro Challenge is a seven-day, 599-mile race pitting 128 of the world's most elite cyclists against one another and the Colorado Rockies. More than 1 million spectators across Colorado are anticipated. Local fans will have the chance to cheer on world and Olympic medalists, national champions as well as Tour de France and Giro d'Italia racers.
Downtown Steamboat Springs will transform Aug. 21 as racers pedal from Breckenridge with a screaming descent down Rabbit Ears Pass into town for a stage finish. Plenty of excitement will surround the race finish as Lincoln Avenue also will play host to a downtown festival complete with live event coverage, vendors, music, kids' activities and more.
The USA Pro Challenge action continues the following morning with a stage start along the promenade at the base of Steamboat Ski Area. Riders will parade through downtown before they are let loose on 13th Street to tackle Twentymile Road en route to a Beaver Creek finish. Called the Queen Stage, denoting the toughest leg of the entire race, the Steamboat-to-Beaver Creek leg already is gaining notoriety among fans and race teams.
Spectators wanting to get into the action will have plenty of cycling options as Bike Town USA hosts Steamboat Springs' first Bike Week from Aug. 17 to 24. From bike art festivals to bike-in movies and community rides to elite races, Bike Week offers a lineup for all ages and abilities.
