Spike strip used to stop SUV; Steamboat man faces DUI

Ian Brady Noyer

— Police used a spike strip to stop an SUV driven by a Steamboat Springs man who officers say was drunk and driving recklessly Monday night east of Hayden.

Routt County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Ian Brady Noyer, 27, on suspicion of vehicular eluding, DUI, reckless driving, speeding, weaving, using unsafe tires and driving without a seat belt.

According to an arrest affidavit filed Tuesday morning with Routt County Court, three separate motorists called 911 on Monday night to report that Noyer almost caused several accidents while driving his Ford Explorer west on U.S. Highway 40 between Milner and Hayden. Deputy Mark Elliott waited for the SUV at Routt County Road 70 and said he saw Noyer pass a car in a no-passing zone around a blind corner, the affidavit states.

"I observed the vehicle swerve into the oncoming lane for no apparent reason multiple times," Elliott said in the affidavit. "Three vehicles traveling east had to pull over to the shoulder to avoid a collision with Noyer."

Elliott said Noyer reached speeds of about 100 miles per hour before a Hayden Police Department officer deployed the spike strip, which Noyer hit while reportedly coming within six inches of the Hayden police car. Noyer continued driving another mile on U.S. 40 before turning onto C.R. 51A toward Yampa Valley Regional Airport and crashing about a half mile down the road.

Noyer immediately was taken into custody. Elliott said Noyer asked three times whether anyone was hurt.

"He informed me he was 'mostly sober,'" Elliott said in the statement. "His eyes were glassy and bloodshot."

Noyer was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and then Routt County Jail. He was advised in court Tuesday and remained in jail as of Tuesday evening with a bond set at $2,000.
