Steamboat Springs — A pack of distance-running boys led the Steamboat Springs High School track team Friday at a meet at Weld Central High School in Keenesburg, logging a number of top finishes before the team split up for spring break.
Jack Burger won the 3,200-meter run, and Jeff Sperry won the 800. Asher Rohde was second in the 3,200.
Burger, Rohde, Sperry and Colton Lewer combined for a second-place finish in the 3,200 relay, and Tanner Morrison and Keegan Burger joined Sperry and Lewer for a fifth-place showing in the 1,600 relay.
"We had hoped to run a little bit better in the (3,200 relay), but the wind was probably blowing 30 miles per hour," Sailors coach Andy Reust said. "There weren't any good times from the early part of the meet, but hey, that's the way it goes. We just went out and tried to run the best we could and win it."
The meet was the team's last before next week's spring break. Most of the athletes are headed out of town, Reust said, which is usually a recipe for disaster for a team a month away from the state meet.
This year, he's adjusted his expectations, however.
Spring break "is pretty tough on us, but this is a good group," he said. "Most of them will do the workouts we ask them to do while they're gone. We have got pretty good faith in most of these kids."
