South Routt School District names new principal to lead its secondary schools
May 28, 2013
South Routt — The newly named principal of Soroco secondary schools is no stranger to small-town education.
For the past two years, Jenifer Hufman has served as the principal of the K-12 school in the Hoehne School District in the small town on the plains just north of Trinidad.
Hufman said Tuesday that she’s excited to make the move to South Routt with her husband, Bob, and her two children.
"I’m thrilled to be joining a community where the first priority is the education of its children," she said.
South Routt Superintendent Scott Mader said the district selected Hufman for the job after extensive interviews with 10 candidates.
She is set to replace Dennis Alt, who is leaving the school to become the new assistant principal at Steamboat Springs High School.

Mader said Hufman’s experience, as well as her understanding of the education reform movements in Colorado, made her stand out during the interview process that involved teachers, parents, administrators and school board members.
"She has six years of administrative experience, and that did mean a lot to us," Mader said. "We wanted someone who wanted to take us to the next level for student achievement, and we feel like she can get us to our goal of being accredited with distinction."
Hufman has served as an educator now for 19 years, starting with a teaching job in Center.
During her career, she has served as a middle school assistant principal, a curriculum director, a lead teacher and a high school literacy coordinator, among other things.
As the principal in Hoehne, she leads a school of about 385 students and holds a Colorado Professional Principal’s license.
The South Routt School Board will consider approving Hufman’s hire at its June 20 meeting.
Hufman’s son, Phillip, will attend seventh grade at Soroco Middle School, and her daughter, Nina, will attend fifth grade at South Routt Elementary School. She also has two adult stepsons.
Hufman said she plans to make the move to South Routt early next month.
