South Routt School District conducts budget survey
March 17, 2014
Steamboat Springs — The South Routt School District is conducting a survey to gauge the community's priorities for the upcoming budget cycle.
The survey is available online at http://southroutt.k12.co.us and in paper form at the district's administration offices and at school buildings.
"We wanted to get an idea of what the community felt was important when we're making budget decisions," South Routt School Board President Jules Palyo said about the idea for the survey.
The last survey done by the board was a number of years ago, Palyo said.
Palyo said the board would like the surveys to be completed or returned by Friday, as the next board meeting is March 27, and time is needed to compile the results for discussion.
The survey asks respondents to rank the importance of several directives or programs for the elementary and secondary campuses and offers a section where additional comments can be submitted.
"To get as many surveys back as possible, we tried to be fairly clear and concise about what we were actually asking," Palyo said.
According to Palyo, the survey was divided between elementary and secondary campus priorities.
"Your priorities change as your kids go through those campuses," he said. "Even if you don’t have kids in the district, you may have feelings how one campus functions versus (the) other."
Palyo said the survey is being publicized through text messages and email alerts as well as voice messages for those in the district. Notifications also are being handed out regarding the paper surveys, he said.
"We're really trying to cover all our bases," Palyo said.
The School Board will use the results of the survey to help it through the 2014-15 budget process.
"It's not the only tool, but it definitely helps in our decision," Palyo said about the results. "The weight will be fairly significant. It is the values of our community."
Ultimately, Palyo said, a lot of work goes into the process, and the board also will rely on itself and the professionals in the district to make final budget decisions.
