South Routt School Board seeking 2 new members; 4 candidates plan to run in Hayden

— The South Routt School District is trying to drum up some interest for two School Board seats that will go without any candidates in November.

Superintendent Scott Mader said no one filed to run for the seats being relinquished by longtime board members Gena Hange and Joel Harris.

The open seats in Districts 5 and 2 cover Stagecoach and the area around, but not including, the town of Yampa.

Potential board members can call the district at 970-736-2313 to learn more about the district boundaries.

The School Board will be able to appoint candidates for the seats after they are interviewed.

"We want to fill these as quickly as possible," Mader said.

He said it was unusual to have two seats without any candidates to fill them in an election.

Incumbents John MCcollum and Jamie Hoff are seeking re-election unopposed.

South Routt’s difficulty in attracting new candidates mirrors what the Steamboat Springs School Board is experiencing this election cycle.

For the first time in at least a decade, the board here is without any candidates in a district.

But in Hayden, the story is different.

Thanks to a recently approved at-large policy that allows candidates from any district to run for the board, four candidates will vie for three open seats.

The candidates include incumbents Tim Frentress and board President Brian Hoza as well as new candidates Medora Fralick, a businesswoman, and Sharon Johnson, the finance manager for the town of Hayden.

The top three vote-getters will win the seats.
