Steamboat Springs — The South Routt School Board tonight is scheduled to consider whether to approve nonlicensed, or support staff, contracts for the 2010-11 school year.
Superintendent Scott Mader said the district employs 32 nonlicensed staff members, such as secretaries, custodians and bus drivers. Mader said his recommendation to the board would be to not renew one of those contracts. He said another nonlicensed staff member has resigned.
The district has indicated needing to cut $150,000 in personnel costs for next school year to help address a projected $472,000 budget shortfall in 2010-11.
The School Board previously voted not to renew one probationary teaching position and eliminated Secondary Dean of Students Raylene Olinger's position next school year. Next year, Olinger will replace South Routt Elementary School Principal Michael Young, who resigned.
Board members are scheduled to enter an executive session at 6:45 p.m. to discuss personnel matters related to new and existing contracts. The regular session is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the district administrative offices in Oak Creek.
Also on tonight's agenda is a discussion and consideration of whether to approve the 2010-11 school year calendar. Mader said the calendar is similar to this year's. He said the School Board had discussed reducing the school year by about 10 days, which would have lengthened each school day about 20 minutes.
But Mader said the district has decided not to trim the number of school days next year.
"When you start shortening the year, even though you're adding time to the day, I don't think it's the quality of education you had when you had those days," he said.
Board members also will consider Business Manager Dina Murray's contract for 2010-11 and next year's staff salary schedule. Mader said the district likely wouldn't provide salary step increases next year. He said salary increases would be provided for only staff members who earn additional education.
Mader also will give a presentation about the potential impacts of statewide measures on the November ballot, Proposition 101 and Amendments 60 and 61, that could negatively affect public education funding in Colorado.
