South Routt group solicits feedback through youth recreation survey

— A group of organizations in South Routt County have formed a coalition focused on recreation, and they're now looking for input from the community.

The South Routt Outdoor Recreation Coalition has created a survey for South Routt students, parents and residents about youth activities and potential programs in the area.

"The Oak Creek Board of Trustees, in conjunction with numerous organizations in South Routt, is developing a plan for parks and outdoor recreation programs and activities in the region," the opening paragraph of the survey reads.

Oak Creek Town Administrator Mary Alice Page-Allen said the coalition is a grouping of the organizations providing services in South Routt.

"We call it a coalition because it really has no formal structure," she said. "It's a good group of folks that are interested in finding ways to promote youth recreation."

The group had an initial brown-bag lunch Feb. 7, Page-Allen said, and is taking steps to be inclusive of the entire community. The group did some brainstorming and decided that the focus of this year was going to be on youths, she said.

"We need to understand what the kids want to do," Page-Allen said about the survey, which has questions about what potential activities students would like to do and in what cost range.

Oak Creek has committed money out of its general fund for a staff member during the summer, and Live Well Northwest Colorado has match those funds with $5,000.

The town also has letters out to youth-focused organizations seeing if additional funding is available, Page-Allen said.

"We expect we'll be able to do something the three months of the summer, then an afterschool program for the balance of the year," she said.

The survey will be open until April 15, Page-Allen said, and the coalition will decide on its next steps after receiving the results.
