Soroco volleyball squeaks out close win against Meeker

— Sloppy play and miscues filled parts of the Soroco High School volleyball team's game against Meeker on Saturday.

But maybe the most telling part was that Soroco didn't just overcome those obstacles — the team also came back and beat Meeker, 3-2, in Oak Creek.

The Rams (1-1) overcame match point three times in the fourth set to come back and get a win, just a night after falling in four games to Plateau Valley.

"This group is very calm," Rams coach Kim Reeves said. "They're calm with each other and on the court. They stay calm, and it's huge in a situation like that."

From the outset, it was evident neither team would give up much. Soroco won the first game, 25-21, with Meeker picking up the second, 25-22.

The Cowboys won Game 3, 27-25, and held a 24-21 advantage in the fourth game. But the Rams fought back, eventually winning, 27-25.

"That's the nature of this year's team," senior Shelby Miles said. "We get along, and we play well when we're controlling the ball."

The teams traded points in the fifth and deciding game, with Soroco having two of its own opportunities to close it out.

Finally a Lauryn Bruggink kill gave the Rams the win.

After Friday's struggle with errors, Reeves said she wanted to see her team play a cleaner game.

Although the Rams struggled at times with errors, when it mattered, the team overcame any early blunders.

"It feels really good," Reeves said. "It was a little harder than we would have liked it to be."

Soroco next plays at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in North Park.
