Soroco volleyball picks up win against Rangely

Luke Graham

The Soroco High School volleyball team can’t seem to get away from its flair for the dramatic.

After staging a furious comeback Friday against Vail Mountain, Soroco gave up a big lead Saturday to Rangely before closing the fifth game with a 3-2 win.

Soroco won, 25-14, 25-17, 16-25, 23-25 and 15-11.

“I told them they are trying to give me an early death,” Rams coach Kim Reeves joked about her team’s tendency to go five games.

Soroco (9-6) started like it was going to be a short afternoon. The Rams were able to get the ball to their slew of hitters on the outside and run away with the first two games.

But Rangely made adjustments, and the kills Soroco was getting easily started to vanish.

“They started digging a lot of our balls,” Reeves said. “We couldn’t keep swinging as hard as we were. We had to start placing our balls a little bit more.”

Going into the fifth game, Rangely seemed to have momentum, but Soroco obviously is no stranger to Game 5.

The Rams started fast and never trailed.

“We said it was no mercy, and we had to push for every point,” Reeves said.

Soroco closes out the regular season at 4 p.m. Friday at North Park.

“Our hitters are hitting their stride,” Reeves said. “For us it’s all about defense and serve-receive.”
