Soroco girls hoops cruise in cross-county rivalry

Ben Ingersoll

— A 4-1 start for Soroco High School girls basketball is right where Rams coach David Bruner wanted his team to be, and a dominant performance in Friday night’s rivalry win over Hayden has the team all smiles heading into the holiday break.

Strong offensive second and third quarters for Soroco opened up a sizable margin en route to the Rams’ 72-33 win.

It was the little things that made the difference in the cross-county rivalry, which Bruner said had his squad a little tight in the first half. Bruner lauded the defensive effort from his front court and his back court’s ability to crash the boards.

“They give great effort,” Bruner said. “These girls play hard, and they’re fun to watch. We had 10 girls play last night.”

DaKota Bruner led all scorers with 21, including 10 of the Rams’ 19 second-quarter points. Briana Peterson and Jessica Rossi pitched in 15 apiece, and Hayley Johnson put seven on the board.

But now the long layoff begins for both teams. Soroco’s next contest is Jan. 6 at home against Beth Eden at 3:30 p.m., and Hayden has to wait until Jan. 10 before the Tigers take the court again against West Grand at home at 7 p.m.

Despite the long gap, the work doesn’t stop.

“We’re going to have some open gyms over Christmas break,” Bruner said. “All of our girls are pretty good about showing up. They know what it takes.”
