Soroco girls D-up to take down Moffat County

Soroco High School Rams

Two weeks ago the Soroco High School girls basketball team got a bit of humbling when they played Moffat County in a scrimmage, Rams' coach David Bruner said.

"They beat us up a little bit, yeah," he said.

The squad turned to a new defense Friday in the semifinals of the Meeker Cowboy Shootout tournament and that worked wonders for Soroco. Behind what Bruner termed the best defensive performance in his 10 years atop the program, the Rams rolled the Bulldogs, 50-31.

"They beat us pretty good in that scrimmage, but we changed defense and played all zone and they really struggled with that," Bruner said.

He pointed specifically to his rotation at the forward positions, with Mattie Rossi, Kourtney Bruner, Taylor Sanchez and Hannah Hayes. Not a one of them tops 5-feet, 8-inches, but against a team with at least three players significantly taller, they more than held their own.

"We probably won offensive and defensive boards for the whole game," David Bruner said.

Chloe Veilleux led Soroco in scoring, pouring in 26 points, and she proved a pest out front, racking up several steals late in the contest to help open up an otherwise tight game.

It was Veilleux's second night as the high scorer. Soroco opened the season Thursday in the tournament's first round, beating Mesa Ridge Junior Varsity 75-25.

It will wrap up play in Meeker at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Cedaredge.
