Soroco girls basketball sneaks past Vail Christian, 49-45
February 7, 2012
Steamboat Springs — The Soroco High School girls basketball team snuck by Vail Christian on Tuesday, winning, 49-45, in overtime.
The win sets up an interesting cross-county showdown at 6 p.m. Friday when Soroco hosts Hayden. The Rams (11-5) and Tigers (10-5) are battling to finish in the upper half of their district.
"It'll just be another class of Routt County rivals," Soroco coach David Bruner said.
But before the Rams could get to their rivals, they had to take care of business Tuesday.
Thanks in large part to the return of Shelby Miles from injury, Soroco was able to come away with the win.
Shelby and Lindsay Miles each scored 16 points to help take the pressure off leading scorer Madison George, who had just five points but kicked in seven assists.
The Rams trailed for most of the first half before hitting a run in the second to tie it at 41 going into overtime.
Soroco was able to make 10 of 13 free throws to secure the win.
Now, the Rams look to the Tigers, a team that beat them, 52-35, earlier this season.
"The first time we played them, we had a great first half," Bruner said. "We were decent most of the game, but we shot 20 percent from the floor. We need to shoot well from the floor if we're going to keep up with them."
