Soroco girls basketball loses for 4th time against Meeker

Steamboat Springs — They at least could appreciate that it's been a good ride and that brighter days may be ahead, but it still hurt Saturday for the Soroco High School girls basketball team. The Rams lost for the fourth time this season to Meeker, falling in the regional championship as the Cowboys advanced to the state tournament, 49-37.
"They were pretty disheartened, but the future is bright," coach David Bruner said.
Soroco trailed by two at half and nine into the fourth quarter, but a more experienced, fresher Meeker team locked down Soroco's top scorers and kept things from getting interesting.
Jacey Schlegel, the Rams’ only senior, led the team with eight points.
"We will miss Jacey. She was a great leader for us," Bruner said.
Still, Soroco hopes this year is only a step. It returns four of its five starters next year. The team this year was one of the best in school history. Bruner said the squad's 16-8 record was the best since 1998, and the team's winning percentage overall was fourth best in the program's history.
"This was a lot of fun," Bruner said. "The fan support was great. It was a great atmosphere to play in for the kids. We'll work this offseason and try to take that next step next year."
