Soroco girls basketball falls short in 41-38 loss

— The Soroco girls team had a chance, and as disappointed as it was when a potentially tying 3-point shot glanced off the rim in the closing seconds of Saturday night's 41-38 home loss to Gilpin County, coach David Bruner couldn't be overly disappointed.

"Hopefully, we learned a lot," he said. "We made some critical errors down the stretch that we can't make, some passes we thought we could get to people, and not boxing out on free throws, but we can learn from that stuff.

"I'm proud of the way we fought back into the game."

The Rams (1-1) took a shot on the chin early, falling behind by 12 points. They trailed by seven at the half but, led by sophomore Jacey Schlegel's team-high 12 points, clawed back into the game in the fourth quarter.

"Gilpin County's a good team. They'll win a lot of games," Bruner said. "This game could have gotten away from us, but it didn't. The girls fought back and tied it up in the fourth quarter, and I'm pleased with that."
