Soroco football wins opener against Gilpin County

— It's a good sign when the punter trots out once.

It's even a better sign when most of the roster scores a touchdown or a 2-point conversion.

And for the Soroco High School football team, Saturday's 60-6 drubbing of Gilpin County signified a building block in the right direction.

"I was pretty pleased how we performed," Soroco coach David Bruner said.

That's an understatement.

The Rams went up 44-0 at half and were able to play their second and third teams throughout the second half.

"And it wasn't just one guy," Bruner said.

Defensively, Soroco was tough, limiting Gilpin County’s opportunities.

Soroco opens at home Friday. The team plays at 7 p.m. against Justice. For Bruner and the Rams, though, it's all building toward the league opener.

And what better way to ring in the football season with a little cross-county rivalry?

It’s Hayden versus Soroco on Sept. 20 in Oak Creek.

"It was good to get out there," Bruner said. "The boys were ready to hit someone else in a different color. These non-league games are getting ready for those league games, starting with Hayden."
