Soroco FFA chapter celebrates at banquet

Jessica Rossi / For the Steamboat Today

The Soroco High School FFA chapter held its annual banquet Thursday to recognize the hard work of its members.

About 150 community members came to celebrate and support the active members of the FFA.

"We had a lot to celebrate," Soroco agriculture education adviser Jay Whaley said. "I just hope we can meet the standard next year and the students can stay motivated and build off of this."

Dean Vogelaar, president of Mountain Valley Bank, gave an inspiring speech on leadership at the banquet. Freshman Tia Rozell gave "The FFA Creed" that she will give at state convention in June. At that convention in Pueblo, Jaelyn Whaley will represent the chapter as the district-winning prepared speaker. The chapter also will celebrate two proficiency winners and a runner up at the state convention.

The highlight of the evening was the selection of the chapter's top members. For first-year members, the Star Chapter Green Hand is Jessica Rossi. Top sophomore and junior members receive the Star Chapter Farmer, and this year's winner was Abby Horn. Madison George, deemed the top senior, was awarded the DeKalb Award. Several other awards were handed out.
