Soroco boys basketball earn opening weekend split

Soroco High School Rams

Friday night wasn't exactly the way the Soroco High School boys basketball team was hoping to start the season. It stumbled on the road against DSST: Byers to a 61-34 loss.

Saturday, however, the team came out with more focus and that led to a much sharper performance and a 43-42 win against Strive Academy on the Front Range.

"That was huge, a big weekend," coach Shawn Hayes said. "Friday night was a wake-up call for them, and Saturday they were pretty excited to realize they'd fought against a much better team than they'd played Friday. It was a big positive to get that win."

Senior Bosch Erickson led the team in scoring Friday with 11 points. Grant Remond had seven, though he missed much of the second half after hyperextending his ankle.

He was back at close to full strength Saturday, and it showed. He scored 14 points to lead the team, then also pulled down 14 rebounds. Both were career highs.

Two of those points proved critically important. The Rams trailed by one point with 11 seconds remaining when Redmond drew a foul. He sank both free throws to give his team the lead for good.

Next up for the Rams is a game Thursday against Aspen in the first round of the Meeker Cowboy Shootout.

"Hopefully we can put together some of what we learned this last week," Hayes said.
