Soroco boys basketball struggles in loss to West Grand

Luke Graham

— The Soroco boys basketball team’s struggles against teams that play man defense continued Saturday against West Grand, as the Rams’ slow first half doomed the team.

Soroco had just one field goal and 15 points in the first half, eventually falling, 51-33.

“We’re still struggling,” Rams coach Andy Johnson said. “It was much different over here than there. As bad as we thought we looked here, it was worse over there.”

Soroco never could get in a rhythm in the first half of a physical contest, struggling from the field and committing 16 turnovers.

The Rams’ lone field goal of the first half came on a Michael Rossi 3-pointer at the 4 minute, 57 second mark of the first quarter.

“We struggled running our man-to-man offense. It’s been a struggle all year,” Johnson said. “We did get better. We got more screens set, whereas before we weren’t screening or cutting.”

Soroco was much better in the second half. After the Rams trailed 30-15 at halftime, the Mustangs outscored the Rams only 21-18 in the second half.

Rossi led the Rams with 9 points.

Soroco (3-8) next plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Vail Christian.

“They’re going to press us,” Johnson said. “We’ll have to make some adjustments to our press breaker. They are not very big, so maybe we can get it over the top on them.”
