Soroco boys basketball falls in overtime
December 12, 2013
Steamboat Springs — Count Jake Eskridge as an optimist. It didn't take the Soroco High School basketball coach long to find a positive after his team's 63-57 overtime loss to Little Snake River High School (Wyo.) in the first round of the Cowboy Shoot-Out in Meeker.
"Hey," he said. "They beat us by 40 last year."
Actually, he didn't even need to look back a year to pull positives from his team's near-miss against the always-tough Rattlers. Soroco trailed big early and on several other occasions throughout Thursday's game but managed to stay in the game, fight back and, thanks to a pair of late Ryan Jeep free throws, send the game to overtime.
"We lost, but I thought we played well," Eskridge said. "We made a few mistakes in overtime, and that cost us the game, but overall, we played well."
Jeep in particular played well, scoring 28 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Eric Logan then scored 11.
The team played without senior Matt Regan, who aggravated an ankle injury in a Tuesday night game, but got quality minutes off the bench and from young players.
"We had some young guys step up and handle the ball, and I was pleased with that," Eskridge said. "Against a very good defensive team, they played well."
The Rams return to the court Friday in Meeker at 3 p.m. against either Rangely or Moffat County High School's junior varsity.
