Skier dies at Howelsen Hill
March 17, 2011
Steamboat Springs — A 19-year-old man died while skiing at the Howelsen Hill Ski Area on Thursday.
Steamboat Springs Police Department Sgt. Sam Silva said the teen, whose name has not been released, was found by Howelsen Hill Ski Patrol on Thursday night. The teen's mom had reported her son missing earlier in the evening, Silva said.
The cause of death has not been determined, Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said late Thursday night. An autopsy is planned.
Silva said it doesn't appear that the death was the result of a collision with another skier or snowboarder. The man was found in an area near the Alpine slide.
"It was definitely an accident," Silva said. The man was not a local resident, he said.
Police did not have any additional information Thursday night. The investigation into the death will continue today.
