Search and Rescue calls off Buffalo Pass search
September 5, 2012
Steamboat Springs — Routt County Search and Rescue members had a unique search mission Wednesday evening.
Incident commander Kristia Check-Hill said the group received a call at about 3:15 p.m. for a 79-year-old local fisherman who was overdue near the Summit Lake area on Buffalo Pass.
She said a Texas man with three llamas reported meeting up with the local man in the morning, and they decided to go together to Lake Albert. They were hiking on the Continental Divide Trail, Trail 1101. The Texan reported that he left the local man with the llamas and told him to stay put so he could go ahead to try to find the lake. When the Texan returned, he was unable to find the local man or the llamas.
Check-Hill said that Search and Rescue members began searching the area and that a team located the llamas but not the local man.
Check-Hill said they think the local man possibly got tired of waiting for the Texan, left the llamas and went home. The local man reportedly had ridden a motorcycle to Buffalo Pass.
Check-Hill said the search has been called off until they hear otherwise. The missing man can call Check-Hill at 970-846-4568 to confirm he is safe.
