Sarah Coleman: 5 tips for successful New Year’s resolutions
January 11, 2018
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Happy New Year friends – 2018, can you even believe it? It's here. And it's going to be fabulous. To help make it the best year yet, here are a few tips to help guide you when making resolutions this time around.
Below you will find ways to make this year's goals simple, realistic and fun. Shout outs are in order here because I've had lots of incredible, kind and humbling insight from some sweet friends on the matter, because sometimes, it takes having those you love hold you accountable.
Keep this in mind when drafting and crafting your personal goals, the most successful resolutions are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.
1. When in doubt, choose one word
Choose a word to define your entire year. Every decision you make will be guided by this one special word. For example, the word could be courage. Meaning every choice you make, everything you do will be done with courage. Get creative with your word.
2. Make your resolution specific but vague.
Recommended Stories For You
I know this seems to contradict itself but hang with me. For example, you want to be able to do 100 burpees without stopping – I mean, who doesn't? Tell yourself you are going to work on burpees – or whatever your fitness goal may be – for five minutes a day. By the end of the year, you will be amazed and inspired.
3. Don't beat yourself up
We hold ourselves to such high standards. Be gentle, go easy on yourself. If a goal isn't being met or you keep slipping, give yourself some credit. Don't stop trying. Maybe tweak it a bit then, get back on the horse. If you want to eat better, give yourself a few cheat days to make the good days really count. Pretty soon, they will all be good days.
4. Ask your tribe for help
Everything is better with your crew by your side. Have some accountability buddies. Tell them your goals. Let them help you. Want to learn something new? Grab a friend to sign up with you. It's much harder to cancel on a friend then it is on yourself. You will in turn be changing two (or more) lives.
5. Finally, and this is the most important one – love yourself
If you truly love yourself all the other things will fall in line. Plain and simple. When you love yourself, you will treat yourself better. When you love yourself, you will eat great. When you love yourself, you will cherish your mind, body and spirit more. When you love yourself, things will fall into place.
Happy New Year!
