Sally Claassen: Veteran crews a success
July 26, 2013
Thank you for your front-page article regarding the Veterans Fire Corps crew. The recognition to the featured veterans is well deserved.
We would like to add a footnote to your article that Rocky Mountain Youth Corps is proud that we also have two veteran crews working on fire fuel mitigation throughout Northwest Colorado. Our veteran corps members range in age from 18 to 32 and work on projects with the BLM, Colorado Youth Corps Association and the National Forest Foundation. Each member who successfully completes his or her term of service receives chain saw certification and red-card firefighting certification. In addition to pay of $360 per week, corps members are eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award.
The veterans serve between nine to 13 weeks. As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps this summer, we have been pleased to add veteran crews to our successful program of a conservation corps that builds healthy, productive young adults while serving our great outdoors.
