Sailors square off with Bulldogs today

Steamboat to face Moffat County today

Ben Bulkeley

— The Steamboat Springs High School varsity basketball teams will find themselves matched up against a familiar opponent today.

The Sailors girls — 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the Western Slope League after a weekend split — will try to make it two wins in a row as they square off with the Moffat County High School Bulldogs (6-8 overall, 4-1 in the WSL) at 6 p.m. today in Steamboat Springs.

MCHS’ schedule for the week includes the Sailors, second in the WSL, then a Saturday contest against first-place Rifle.

The Sailors and Bulldogs girls teams are coming off wins against Glenwood Springs.

For MCHS, their 51-36 win against the Demons came Jan. 22 at home.

Lauren Roberts dominated on the boards, scoring 14 points and collecting nine rebounds, while Amanda Snyder provided long-range fireworks with nine points from beyond the three-point line.

The Sailors girls knocked off the Demons on Jan. 23, winning, 55-40, on the road.

At 7:30 p.m. today, the boys will get their chance to play.

The Bulldogs (3-11 overall, 1-4 overall) are coming off an 80-73 Jan. 22 home loss to Glenwood Springs and will have to play the Sailors (8-6 overall, 5-1 in the WSL) on their home court.

The Sailors also are coming off of a loss to the Demons. Glenwood beat Steamboat, 49-42, on Saturday in Glenwood Springs.

It’s a challenge the team can’t wait for, MCHS coach Steve Maneotis said.

“It’s good to get back on the floor for us because that was a tough loss,” he said about the Glenwood Springs game.

But the game against Glenwood Springs should be helpful in the future for the Bulldogs, Maneotis said.

“Now, they know the difference between 1-4 and 5-0,” he said. “We’re not far off, but we have a lot of work to get there. This league has a lot of parity in it. Every game is a battle.”

The Bulldogs key to success is to find the offensive and defensive rhythm it established in a 19-4 third quarter against Glenwood, Maneotis said.

“We need to have four quarters like our third quarter against Glenwood,” he said.

On offense, the Bulldogs have to continue to improve their shot selection, Maneotis said.

“Don’t settle for an average shot; go for a great shot,” he said. “Second shot opportunities are a must.”

Against Steamboat Springs, the defense will have to be on its toes, Maneotis said.

“We have to play solid team defense, through in through,” he said. “They have a great point guard in (Isiah) Forsyth, they have (Jack) Spady, and (Charles) Wood. That’s a triple-headed monster of guys we need to stop first.”

Maneotis said playing in Steamboat Springs will be a challenge the Bulldogs have to overcome.

The Sailors “find ways to win, and we can’t allow that to happen,” he said. “We have to go to Steamboat and win in a tough environment against a good team.”
