Sailors slip at Wheat Ridge, eye key Tuesday matchup

Joel Reichenberger

— It wasn’t a win, and in the end, it didn’t look close, but Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer coach Rob Bohlmann said Saturday’s 3-0 loss on the road at Wheat Ridge was an important game for his team, and one in which, despite the result, his girls showed up.

“Sometimes it’s tough to look at a result and know what happened,” he said. “Our girls were awesome. They played really well.”

Wheat Ridge, the No. 7-ranked team in Class 4A by this week’s http://www.chsaanow.com poll, proved plenty of a match for Steamboat, but Bohlmann said the Sailors came away from an evenly played game with a big advantage in shots, 14-5. The score was a reflection of several holes in Steamboat’s defense, mistakes he’s hoping his team can clean up in time for a pivotal game at home Tuesday against Glenwood Springs.

“Two of their goals came from us not stepping up to give pressure quick enough,” he said. “When you allow them to get into the attacking third, we have to be tighter on the ball.”

Steamboat, 5-5, plays at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Glenwood, 7-1. The result could be a major boost to the Sailors’ standing in the Western Slope league, and it’s a must-win for Steamboat’s playoff hopes.

“We look to Glenwood and know we have to clean things up in our defending and attacking thirds, but we feel good about how we’re playing,” Bohlmann said.
