Sailors hockey skates to win

Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team got off to a fast start, had goals from four players and filled the stat sheet Friday, downing Fountain Valley, 4-2.
Steamboat went up 4-0 early in the third period before a questionable goal and a breakaway opportunity took the shutout away from Steamboat goaltender Erik Owen.
"We had assists from five other guys," Steamboat coach Jeff Ruff said. "Nine numbers on the scoring chart — it certainly is what we're looking to do. It's not one line that scores all the goals. It's two or three lines that can score."
After an opening tournament in which Jake Bearss scored all four Steamboat goals, on Friday, Steamboat got contributions from nearly every line.
Vladan Chase gave Steamboat a 1-0 lead, and Bearss made it 2-0 after one period.
Jon Winkelblech scored the lone second period goal, and Skyler Martin added a tally in the third.
"We're pretty psyched about it," Bearss said.
Steamboat, now 1-1-2, plays at 3 p.m. today against Mullen at Howelsen Ice Arena. Steamboat easily beat a bigger Mullen squad last year, and Ruff said he expects Steamboat to again play a high-tempo type of game to combat Mullen's size advantage.
"Our biggest focus for (today) is continuing the solid play we had (Friday)," he said. "We did let down in that third period, but we've done a nice job."
