Sailors golf finishes 2nd yet again
August 13, 2014
Steamboat Springs — Technically, the result was the same, but the same result for a third day in a row left the Steamboat Springs High School boys golf team ready for a break Wednesday.
The squad closed out a three-rounds-in-three-days streak with its third consecutive second-place finish.
The Sailors finished with a score of 229, two strokes behind Montrose.
“We kind of got off to a slow start, and it took us awhile to get in the groove,” coach Steve Dodson said.
Will Firestone led the way for the team with a score of 75.
“I hit the ball pretty good and I hit every fairway, so I didn’t get in much trouble off the tee,” he said. “It was pretty good.”
Brandon Martin and Britt Walton each carded 77s. Spencer Petersen had a 79, and Andrew Firestone an 83.
Will Firestone was the third of his teammates to finish with the team’s lowest score in as many days.
“If I’ve learned one thing, it’s that any given day a different kid can lead the team,” Dodson said. “That’s an enjoyable problem to have.”
Both Firestone and Dodson agreed the team’s short game must be a focus as the squad now returns to practice.
“We’re all pretty good ball strikers,” Firestone said. “We just can’t get up and down as much as we want to.”
The team returns to action Monday with a trip to Aspen.
