Sailors girls tennis team splits Saturday doubleheader

It was an up and down day for the Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team Saturday, one that left the team plenty to focus on as the season nears its end.

Steamboat lost to Ralston Valley, 6-1, then rebounded to beat Boulder, by the same score.

“We were flatfooted against Ralston, and that made a difference,” Steamboat coach John Aragon said. “I think that should have been 4-3, one way or the other, but it didn’t happen. They have a solid team, but we didn’t compete as well as we could have against them.”

Steamboat got its lone win in that match from the No. 3 doubles team of Hanna Haggarty and Malia Fraioli. They won, 6-4, 6-2.

The Sailors were close elsewhere. Rachel Grubbs took her No. 1 singles match to three sets, for instance. But Steamboat couldn’t pull off any more wins.

The team was much sharper — albeit against lesser competition — against Boulder. The only loss came at No. 1 singles, after Grubbs had to sit out with an injury. Sophie Payo subbed in from the junior varsity squad.

“Against Boulder, we came out and played well,” Aragon said. “Now, we have one tournament left, then we go to regionals. It’s been a good season, and we’ve learned a lot. We have a solid team, and we just have to keep working.”
