Sailors get split with 5-2 win against Thompson Valley

With strong play up and down the lineup, the Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team picked up a solid win Saturday, beating Thompson Valley, 5-2, a day after a 6-1 loss against Fossil Ridge.

Steamboat got wins from Ellie Bender at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2; Kira Lorenzen, 6-1, 6-0; and Maddie Labor, 6-3, 6-4, in single play.

In doubles, the Sailors had wins from Sydney Boyd and Shannon Ross at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-0; and Jessie Selby and Emma Wilson at No. 4 doubles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

"Our No. 3 and No. 4 doubles, they had really even matches and it was great to see our young players pull out big wins for us," Steamboat coach John Aragon said. "They had a lot of hustle on the court and were aggressive putting balls in play. It was just great to see them both on the same page, working hard and beating a good team relatively easily."

The team lost matches at No. 1 doubles with Hanna Haggarty and Emmie Thompson falling, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, and Sabina Berend and Maddie Thompson losing at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 8-6.

The result came after a tough day Friday against Fossil Ridge.

Labor grabbed Steamboat's lone victory of the day, a 6-4, 6-3 win. Bender lost, 6-0, 6-0, and Lorenzen was dropped, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles play, Haggarty and Thompson lost, 6-2, 6-0. Berend and Thompson lost, 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 doubles of Ross and Boyd fell, 6-1, 6-2.

"Fossil Ridge is one of the top 5A teams in the state," Aragon said. "As a team, we need to keep practicing and playing with a purpose and see if we can close that gap. They're a very good team."

Steamboat now has a week off before returning to action April 8 at home against Vail Mountain.
