Sailors earn first regional title

After years of teaching tennis, Steamboat Springs coach John Aragon got to witness a first Friday: the Steamboat Springs girls tennis team winning its first regional title.
Steamboat scored 88 points at the tournament in Delta. Montrose was second with 54, and Glenwood Springs was third with 39.
Thanks to the dominating performance, the Sailors will send all 11 players to the state tennis tournament, which begins Thursday at Pueblo City Park in Pueblo.
“It was so nice to see how all the girls rooted for each other,” Aragon said. “This was a great tournament, and our players really bonded as a team. It was important for them that everybody made it to state.”
Among the nine Steamboat winning titles was No. 1 singles player Kelli Parnell, who defeated Delta’s Annie Chastain, 6-0, 6-1, to lead a Sailors sweep in the singles bracket.
Breanne Murray defeated Glenwood Spring’s Roni St. Pierre, 6-1, 6-0, to take the title at No. 2 singles, and Lisa Floyd defeated Glenwood’s Caitlyn Fowler, 6-0, 6-0, to take the title at No. 3 singles.
