Sailors boys tennis opens season with win

Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School boys tennis team opened the 2011 season Friday with a pair of wins in Grand Junction.
Steamboat beat Montrose, 6-1, and Durango, 5-2.
"It was extremely hot," coach John Aragon said. "In that second match, they didn't care about it and went out and played hard. They concentrated and got the job done. Coach (Don) Toy and I are really pleased with their effort."
Against Montrose, Steamboat got wins from singles players Kyle Rogers, Colin Green and Gabri Erspamer.
The No. 1 doubles team of Erik Sortland and Corbin Diehl, No. 2 doubles team of Stefan Sortland and Quinn Cain and the No. 4 doubles team of Jesse Laughlin and Nick Mathews all picked up wins.
In the second match against Durango, Steamboat juggled its roster around.
Erik Sortland picked up a win at No. 3 singles, Erspamer and Diehl won at No. 1 doubles, Cain and Stefan Sortland won at No. 2 doubles, Lev Tsypin and Ben Wharton won at No. 3 doubles, and Laughlin and Mathews won at No. 4 doubles.
The team resumes play at 8:30 a.m. today in Grand Junction against Aspen.
"That will be a good match for us," Aragon said about regional opponent Aspen. "It really is."
