Routt unemployment down to 8.3 percent in August

— Routt County's unemployment rate was down 0.2 percentage points to 8.3 percent in August, according to figures released today by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. The figure was 8.5 percent in July. Numbers have not been adjusted for typical seasonal changes.

Routt's numbers reflected a smaller labor force from the previous month. In July, employment was 13,299, with 1,230 unemployed, for a total labor force of 14,529. In August, the labor force was down 67 people, to 14,462. Of those, 13,261 had jobs and 1,201 did not. That means the numbers represent 38 fewer jobs in the county.

Routt's jobless rate in August 2009 was 6.5 percent, which represented 14,147 people with jobs and 985 people without them, for a labor force of 15,132.

In Moffat County, the August unemployment rate was 8.1 percent, down from 8.6 percent in July. That’s up from 6.3 percent in August 2009.

Statewide, the unemployment rate was 8.2 percent, compared with 7.9 percent in August 2009. That number was seasonally adjusted.

According to a news release from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, “The unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) decreased in 43 of Colorado's 64 counties, increased in nine and was unchanged in 12. The lowest rate was 2.9 percent in Hinsdale County and the highest was 14.5 percent in Dolores County.”

Statewide, employment increased slightly over July in three categories: “other services” saw 200 more jobs, and education and health services each added 100, according to the release. Employment decreased in leisure and hospitality (3,800); government employment (1,600, largely attributed to Census-related layoffs); trade, transportation and utilities (1,300) and professional and business services (1,000); information (500); and manufacturing and financial activities (400 each). Mining and logging were unchanged, according to the release.

Nationally, unemployment increased 0.1 percentage point in August to 9.6 percent.
