Routt County wrestlers complete regional tournament
February 16, 2013
Steamboat Springs — When Hayden High School wrestling coach Chad Jones and his staff sat down a couple weeks ago and took a hard look at the regional wrestling tournament, they drew out a plan.
There was the ideal one, the likely one and, of course, the worst-case scenario.
Turns out the Tigers followed the ideal path.
Hayden qualified five of its seven wrestlers for the Colorado State Wrestling Championships in Denver.
Judd Magee was fourth at 106 pounds, Tanner Guire was fourth at 113 pounds, Kent Miller was fourth at 132 pounds and Taylor Lewis was fourth at 160 pounds.
Magee and Guire each had to have wrestle-backs to earn their way to state.
Tigers senior Ryan Domson, just back from a knee injury, won his second straight regional title, cruising at 182 pounds.
"It was as good as we could have hoped for," Jones said. "Especially with a young team, it was all in all an excellent weekend."
Hayden's Tate Montieth at 126 pounds just missed making state and finished fifth.
The state championships begin Thursday in Denver and run through Saturday.
Rams qualify two
The Soroco High School wrestling team qualified a pair of wrestlers for the Colorado State Wrestling tournament.
Colton Martindale at 120 pounds was third, while Cody Constine at 195 pounds was second.
Dillon Koler was fifth at 138 pounds and Nate Ragan was fifth at 220 pounds, each narrowly missing the state tournament.
"I was pleased," Rams coach Jay Whaley said. "We finished our matches well; even when we lost them, we finished well. So that was encouraging.”
For Martindale and Constine, it will be their first trip to the state tournament. Whaley said his advice to them is simple.
"I'll tell them that the other boys put their pants on the same way they do," Whaley said. "It's just a bunch of kids in the same building."
Steamboat comes up empty
The Steamboat Springs High School wrestling team was in good position entering the second day of the regional tournament.
Unfortunately, the Sailors couldn't find a way to advance any wrestler to the state tournament.
Dane Koepfer was fifth at 145 pounds and Cole Sittig was fifth at heavyweight, each just missing out on qualifying.
Nathan Parks was sixth at 126 pounds, and Brandon Yeager at 182 pounds and Guerin Lewis at 152 pounds couldn't make their way out of the consolation bracket.
