Routt County United Way to kick off annual fundraising campaign Friday

— As they celebrate reaching a $510,000 fundraising goal for 2012, leaders of Routt County United Way already are preparing to try for an even bigger fundraising goal starting Friday.

United Way volunteers will be at Yampa Valley Bank from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. collecting donations for the nonprofit’s $10K Day for United Way, an event that will serve as the launching point for United Way’s 2013 fundraising campaign.

Yampa Valley Bank will match as much as $5,000 worth of donations made Friday.

"It’s exciting, and honestly, it’s a little daunting," United Way Executive Director Kelly Stanford said about the launch of the annual fundraising drive. "But we have faith in the generosity of our community, and we are pleasantly surprised every year at how that generosity plays out."

The nonprofit learned last week the proceeds from the Ski Town USA Golf Classic in June helped it surpass its 2012 fundraising goal by $1,000. Organizers hope to collect an even larger sum of $525,000 in the latest campaign.

Stanford said about 60 percent of United Way’s donations come from individuals with the remainder coming from payroll deductions and corporate sponsorships.

"That makes the 10K day really important for us," Stanford said. "It’s an opportunity for us to connect with individual donors."

Food at the fundraiser will be provided by Ciao Gelato and Sweetwater Grill, and KEZZ will do a live broadcast.

United Way fundraising chairwoman Catherine Carson said the money that is collected will continue to support important causes in Routt County. From Yampa Valley Autism Program to the Northwest Colorado Dental Coalition, Routt County United Way financially supports more than 40 health and human services groups.

"We have such a caring community in Routt County, and our nonprofits have such a huge impact," she said. "They certainly do a wonderful job of leveraging the funds we give them."

Routt County United Way, LIFT-UP of Routt County and Routt County’s Department of Human Services also have teamed up this year to launch the Routt County Bridges Initiative, a program aimed at helping local low-income families become self-sufficient.
