Routt County track athletes shine in 1 of season’s final weekends

Steamboat Springs — Meg O'Connell helped lead the way for the Steamboat Springs High School track team on Saturday at the Joe Shields Invitational track meet at West Grand High School.
O'Connell was best in the 1,600-meter run, placing third, with teammate Seana Harker in eighth. O'Connell also had a top-10 finish with a ninth-place performance in the 300 hurdles. She was joined in that race by Isabel Feldmann, who was seventh.
Alex Tumminello was also fast Saturday, finishing third in the 800. Harker was sixth.
The Steamboat girls got a trio of top-10 finishes in the 400 with Lena Barker in fifth, Temsup Techarukpong in sixth and Riley Toye in ninth.
Steamboat's 1,600 relay was fifth and the 800 relay ninth.
In the field, Alexis Balgenorth lept to eighth place in the long jump. Kelsey Spognardi was right there, too, in ninth.

On the boys side, Koby Vargas was fifth in the 800 and ninth in the pole vault. Steamboat also placed high with an eighth-place 1,600 relay team and an 800 relay that was ninth.
Hayden and Soroco competed Saturday, as well, and also had a healthy number of top-10 finishes.
Thomas Rauch and Jack Redmond dominated for the Hayden boys. Redmond was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Rauch, meanwhile, placed third in the high jump and seventh in the long jump.
For Soroco, the girls 800 relay had the top result, placing second. The 400 relay and 1,600 relay were each third.
DaKota Bruner had a strong day, placing fourth in the long jump, with Lauren Childs, who was 10th. Bruner was also ninth in the 200 dash, behind Hayley Johnson, in sixth.
Kali Constine was third in the high jump and Jessica Rossi sixth in the pole vault.
On the boys side, Bjorn Carlson showed well on the track and in the field. He was fourth in the high jump and the long jump, then ninth in the 200. Micah Gibbons was 10th in the 200 but even better in the discus, placing fourth. Ian Palyo also placed in the discus, landing seventh. Palyo was also seventh in the shot put.
