Routt County teams prepare for weekend games

Luke Graham

Steamboat Springs baseball

4 p.m. Thursday: Steamboat (4-8) vs. Rifle (9-6) at Craig Middle School

9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday: Steamboat vs. Summit (5-10) at Craig Middle School

The Steamboat baseball team still has a chance to make the playoffs, but it needs some help. The first thing the team needs to do is take care of business. The Sailors need to win their last five games, including three in Craig this weekend. Steamboat lost, 8-5, to Rifle earlier this season but should have won. A win Thursday would be the perfect precursor to Saturday’s doubleheader against Summit.

Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse

4 p.m. Thursday: Steamboat (10-3) vs. Summit (8-6)

1 p.m. Saturday: Steamboat vs. Grand Junction (6-6)

Steamboat has a pair of Mountain League games left, and both are must-wins to make the playoffs. It should be interesting how the Sailors respond coming off spring break. Steamboat should see some decent competition as Summit and Grand Junction each gave league-leading Aspen games. Steamboat needs to keep the momentum rolling as the team preps for the Class 4A playoffs.

Steamboat Springs girls soccer

5 p.m. Thursday: Steamboat (8-3-3) at Glenwood Springs (10-4)

The hard-luck Sailors should have won Tuesday against Palisade in the opening round of the league playoffs. The team eventually lost, 3-1, via penalty kicks but had opportunities to put the game away. The team beat Glenwood, 3-1, earlier in the season. Steamboat needs a win to bolster its body of work for the state playoff seeding committee. With so many scenarios to play out, Steamboat just knows it needs a win.

Steamboat Springs girls lacrosse

10:30 a.m. Saturday: Steamboat (6-7) vs. Durango (4-8)

Senior day should be emotional for a variety of reasons. This is the most successful lacrosse season the Steamboat girls have seen. The seniors grew in the program and turned a winless season last season into a resounding success this season. Steamboat also should have a good shot playing Durango.

Routt County track and field

9 a.m. Saturday: Steamboat, Soroco and Hayden at Battle Mountain

The countdown is on for local high schools. With regional meets scheduled for next weekend and the state meet beginning May 16, the three local schools have just a couple of opportunities to get into the top 18 of events and qualify for state. The weather should be helpful and times could reflect that.
