Routt County teams prepare for weekend action

Luke Graham

Steamboat Springs wrestling

6 p.m. Thursday: Steamboat vs. Summit

9 a.m. Saturday: Steamboat at West Grand Tournament

The Steamboat Springs wrestling team is riding a wave of solid results. The team won the 10-team Soroco tournament during the weekend. The team duals with Summit on Thursday before heading to West Grand on Saturday. It should show well against Summit and has an opportunity to see some solid competition in West Grand. Steamboat’s Nathan Parks has been on a tear.

Steamboat Springs girls basketball

6 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (4-1) vs. Rifle (2-2)

2 p.m. Saturday: Steamboat vs. Glenwood Springs (4-0)

The Steamboat girls basketball team should return its full contingent of players for a pair of league matchups after finishing third at the Steamboat Springs Shoot-Out. It will be interesting to see how seamless the rotation becomes with the new faces. With the two league opponents, it’s imperative Steamboat gets off to a good start.

Steamboat Springs boys basketball

7:30 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (4-1) vs. Rifle (2-2)

3:30 p.m. Saturday: Steamboat vs. Glenwood Springs (1-4)

After finishing third at the Steamboat Springs Shoot-Out, Steamboat jumps into league play with a pair of winnable games. Winning these first two would help a woefully inexperienced team with confidence. Steamboat has looked great at times while struggling at others. Finding consistency will be key.

Steamboat Springs hockey

6:30 p.m. Friday: Steamboat (2-0) vs. Aspen (3-0) at Howelsen Ice Arena

So far, so good under first-year coach Benny Tollar. Steamboat picked up a pair of good wins against mountain-town opponents Battle Mountain and Summit. Undefeated Aspen will present a tougher challenge. The game loses a little importance because it’s not a conference game, but a win Friday would allow Steamboat to stake its claim as king of mountain-town hockey.

Steamboat Springs Nordic ski team

10 a.m. Saturday: at Vail Mountain

It’s obviously been a tough year for the Steamboat Nordic team. But better late than never. With a full roster, Steamboat will open its season Saturday. It will be the first look at the rest of the state.

Hayden girls basketball

5 p.m. Friday: Hayden (0-4) vs. Encampment, Wyo. (0-5)

Noon Saturday: Hayden at Baggs, Wyo. (2-2)

The Hayden girls have struggled with a young and inexperienced roster this season. But coach Michelle Wilkie insists the team has improved each game. It should have an opportunity Friday to get its first win of the year against winless Encampment.

Hayden boys basketball

6:30 p.m. Friday: Hayden (3-1) vs. Encampment, Wyo. (5-0)

1:30 p.m. Saturday: Hayden at Baggs, Wyo. (3-3)

The Hayden boys basketball team is riding a high after finishing second in the Steamboat Springs Shoot-Out. But the team faces another stiff test this weekend with two tough teams from Wyoming. Hayden should be challenged in both.

Hayden and Soroco wrestling

9 a.m. Saturday: Hayden and Soroco at West Grand Tournament

Both teams have put up mixed results through two tournaments. Saturday’s West Grand Tournament will give both teams an early look at regional competition. Results from this one should set a good baseline as teams work to get in last action before the holiday break.

Soroco girls basketball

2:30 p.m. Saturday: Soroco (4-1) at Beth Eden (0-0) in Wheat Ridge

Even Soroco basketball coach David Bruner is surprised. The Rams are off to a blistering start. The reason? Bruner said this team is playing harder than any in his five years. It goes 10 deep, and despite off nights, it has used its defense to key spurts.
