Routt County schools fare well at Saturday track meet

Rohde tops in 1,600-meter run

— Routt County high school track teams recorded high finishes Saturday as all three — Steamboat Springs, Hayden and Soroco high schools — competed at a large meet at Eagle Valley High School.

Steamboat Springs senior Asher Rohde led the way for local competitors, flying to a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter run. He finished in 4 minutes, 43.48 seconds. He also was fifth in the 800-meter run and was part of an 11th-place 1,600-meter relay team, alongside Colton Lewer, Erik Powers and Charles Tisch.

"That's his first win. He ran a brilliant race with super even splits," Sailors coach Greg Long said about the 1,600-meter run. "He did not take the lead until the final lap, then he ran away with it. He was in third place and there was a pretty big gap, but on laps two and three, he closed that gap and took the lead."

Kodie Hoyt also had one of his best days for Steamboat. He was third in the shotput and fifth in discus. Tanner Morrison was sixth in the 400-meter run with a personal best and 13th in the 200-meter run. Colton Lewer finished in sixth, right behind Rohde in the 800-meter run.

The boys 800-meter relay with Lewer, Morrison, Tisch and Dylan Wilkinson was sixth, the 400 relay with Lewer, Wilkinson, Powers and Tisch was ninth and Alexandrea Bryant was 17th in discus and 20th in the 800-meter run.

Miles, Paxton score big for Rams

Senior Lindsay Miles helped led the way for Soroco. She was fifth in the long jump, recording a personal best in the event at 14 feet, 4-1/2 inches. Nic Paxton also had a strong day, finishing fourth in the triple jump and eighth in long jump. Haley Johnson, meanwhile, was eighth in the 100-meter dash.

"It's a work in progress," Soroco coach David Bruner said about his team. "We'll start seeing some good results by the end of April. We still have to get in better shape, but we'll work on that in the next few weeks, and by the end of April, we'll hopefully be there."

Williams 2nd for Tigers

Savannah Williams's second-place finish in the girls 3,200-meter run was the best of a bunch of strong Hayden performances. Williams finished in 13:17.32, well behind the winner but comfortably in second.

Aubree Haskins also scored for the squad, placing sixth in the shotput with a toss of 31 feet, 6 inches. She also was 14th in the discus. Cassidy Holmes, meanwhile, was 10th in the shot, and Heather Nereson was 16th in the 800. Becca Hoza, Laura Johnson, Millie Delaney and Kara Cozzens were 10th in the sprint medley relay.

Dakota Zehner, Jordan Ferrier, Dan Engle and Hunter Johnston were 10th in the 800-meter relay, and Liam Delaney, Ferrier, Ian Candenhead and Jack Redmond were 12th in the 1,600-meter relay.

Delaney was 13th in the 800, Zehner was 11th in the high jump and 15th in the long jump, Jorge Valdez was 12th in the high jump and Engle was 14th in the same event.
