Steamboat Springs — A host of local contestants combined to bring home horse show wins the past two weekends.
Senior and junior competitors took part in the Colorado State Fair during Labor Day Weekend and at the Colorado State National Barrel Horse Championship last weekend.
Husband-wife team Jason and Brandy Patrick competed at the State Fair in Pueblo in several events. Jason's 2-year-old horses took first and second place in the National Reined Cow Horse Association limited open futurity show. Brandy scored a big win with her horse, As Smart As Spook, in the American Saddlebred Horse Association Green Horse Trail division.
The Patricks' wins were against some intense competition.
"There are quite a few professionals in her class, and she won it,” Jason said about Brandy. “She was kind of psyched."
Steamboat junior competitors Mackenzie Holmberg and Taylor Elliott combined in the American Quarter Horse Association show to tally wins themselves. Holmberg took home the Quarter Horse Association and Saddlebred Horse Association youth championships, and Elliott won the Quarter Horse Association reserve championship, Jason Patrick said.
The official results from the Colorado State National Barrel Horse Championship aren't posted, but mother-daughter combo Alicia and Kelsey Samuelson competed Sept. 6 and 7 in Longmont.
In an email, Alicia wrote that she won the senior 50-and-older division 1D both days on a 24-year-old mare “with a lot of heart.” Kelsey took home the 1D open competition. The competitions feature several divisions, with 1D being the premier event.
The duo has battled a busy summer season. Alicia said they both won average buckles at the Tri State Barrel Race in Craig, and Kelsey, 23, is on the verge of getting her pro card this fall.
In a few weeks, the Samuelsons will take part in the Mile Hi Barrel Horse Western Slope finals from Sept. 27 to 29 in Loveland. The two also are members of Colorado National Barrel Horse Association District-10, which will have its finals on Oct. 5 and 6.
