May 18, 2014
Savannah Williams, track and field
Steamboat Springs — 2013 graduate of Hayden High School, freshman at Dodge City Community College
Williams wrapped up a strong first season of collegiate competition with several stellar performances in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She won the race at the National Junior College Athletics Association Region VI outdoor championships, then traveled to Mesa, Arizona, for the NJCAA Championships, where she placed 16th.
Chris Zirkle, track and field
2011 graduate of Hayden High School, junior at Northwest Christian University
Zirkle moved on to Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Oregon, after a career at Garden City Community College in Kansas, and he's continued to record top times in distance running. He set a school record in the 10,000-meter run last month and qualified for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship in that distance as well as in the 5,000. He ran the 10,000 there and placed fourth.
Jasper Gantick, lacrosse
2009 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, senior at University of Tampa
The Spartans’ dream season came to an end Sunday as they lost in the NCAA Division 2 men's lacrosse semifinal, 14-10, against Limestone College. Gantick was a captain on the team and helped guide the squad throughout its 16-3 campaign, in which it spent most of the season ranked in the top 10 and won the Sunshine State Conference for a third consecutive year before putting together a deep tournament run.
Alex Estes, track and field
2010 graduate of Soroco High School, senior at Adams State University
Estes was seventh in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump earlier this month at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships. After four years competing with the track and field team, he graduated this month.
