Routt County clerk and recorder: Completed ballots ‘flooding in’
700 ballots have been returned as undeliverable
October 19, 2011
Steamboat Springs — It's election season and completed ballots already are arriving steadily at the Routt County Clerk and Recorder's Office.
Several hundred active voters, however, may not have received their ballots.
As of Wednesday, there have been 679 ballots returned as undeliverable by the U.S. Postal Service, elections deputy Vicki Weber said.
"My goal is to make sure every voter gets a ballot," Clerk and Recorder Kay Weinland said.
Some of the undeliverable ballots may be for voters who have left the area, but a good portion of them may be for voters who failed to update their addresses, Weinland said.
Those who have not received their ballots can call the Clerk and Recorder's Office at 970-870-5556.

The number of undeliverable ballots is a third less than in previous mail elections, Weinland said.
"We've done a tremendous amount of voter correspondence … and making sure that the addresses were compatible with the Postal Service," Weinland said. "We work diligently to make sure the voter records are accurate."
She said completed ballots are flooding into her office.
Of the 11,702 ballots mailed to active voters, Weinland's office had received 1,411 completed ballots as of Wednesday, along with 10 others where signature verifications are being requested.
"The closer we get to the election, the more we get," Weber said.
Weinland said she was pleased with the turnout so far.
Officials can begin scanning the completed ballots as early as Monday, but the results of those scans will not be known by anyone until Nov. 1.
Voters also have the option to vote electronically on a voting machine at the Clerk and Recorder's Office from now until Election Day but must surrender their mail ballot to do so.
