Routt County awards engineering bid for 4 minor bridge replacements

Steamboat Springs — The Routt County Board of Commissioners agreed Tuesday to award a $56,000 engineering contract for four minor bridge replacement projects to EST engineering, of Oklahoma City, as they continue the work of updating structurally deficient bridges around the upper Yampa Valley.
The bid to design the four bridges takes in projects ranging from just outside Yampa in South Routt to California Park to the north.
Routt County Road and Bridge Assistant Director Mike Mordi told the commissioners that the four bridges targeted for replacement were the worst of 15 identified by a consulting firm as having a poor sufficiency rating.
Road and Bridge Director “Janet (Hruby) and I went out and inspected all 15 ourselves, and these four are the most compromised. That's why we want to replace these," Mordi said.
The projects include replacement of Middle Creek Bridge at the intersection of Routt County Road 27 and an abandoned portion of C.R. 31 in the vicinity of Twentymile Mine, Gunn Creek Bridge on C.R. 36 on the way to Strawberry Park Hot Springs, Cottonwood Creek Bridge at C.R. 56 and C.R. 80 in California Park north of Hayden, and the crumbling Art Deco Bridge over a ditch outside Hayden.
Mordi said the Art Deco Bridge is not architecturally significant as the name implies.
County purchasing agent Marti Hamilton told the commissioners that requests for proposals to design the newest projects went out to 25 firms and a half-dozen responded.
"We got six proposals that went from almost $300,000 to just over $50,000," Mordi added.
Mordi said it's likely the design will permit prebuilt bridge structures and said there is a chance their installation could be handled in-house by the Road and Bridge Department.
EST's bid was just slightly over that of Glenwood Springs-based High Country Engineering, already working with Routt County on another larger bridge. But EST submitted more preliminary engineering details to win the recommendation of the Road and Bridge Department. EST purchased a Denver firm earlier this year and has been working to widen its presence throughout Colorado.
Among the bidders were local firms Drexel Barrel and Littlehorn Engineering. Drexel Barrel's bid on the latest design work was $145,000. Another local firm, Littlehorn Engineering, bid $299,900. Drexel Barrel has recently worked with the county on other bridge replacement projects.
